A Few of My Most Hated Things

Most Hated, Julie Andrews

Distill into a single flask all the synthetic sweetness and faux sentimentality of this holiday season and voilà! The cloying genie in your bottle is none other than Julie Andrews!

We all have our private list of activities, things and people we hate for no intelligible reason.

My daughter Julie hates the chef on the Food Network who identifies himself as The Sandwich King.

My wife hates white chocolate.

And Julie Andrews singing about a few of her favorite things–I hate that. When did it become part of the Christmas pop songbook?

“These are a Few of my Favorite Things” is one of several hit songs coming out of the 1959 Rodgers & Hammerstein score of The Sound of Music. The song’s been recorded by vocalists from Barbara Streisand and Kelly Clarkson to the cast of “Glee.”

Here’s the classic version of the lyrics:

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

Brown paper packages tied up with strings

These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels

Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles

Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings

These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes

Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes

Silver white winters that melt into Springs

These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don't feel so bad.

And here’s my take on it:

Flip-flops on women and cell phones on sidewalks

Valley Girl accents and models like beanstalks

Britney and Miley, who twerks when she sings,

These are a few of my most hated things

Beyonce and Bieber and all the Kardashians,

Pelosi and Boehner and half-baked Alaskans

Gluten-free muffins and Buffalo wings

These are a few of my most hated things

Anchors on TV who come across clueless

Talk shows with chatter that’s totally mindless

Halfwitted athletes with pay like they’re kings

These are a few of my most hated things

When the dog bites

When the bee stings

When I'm feeling sad

I simply remember my most hated things

And then I don't feel so bad.

The truth of the matter is that too many of us tend to hate some part of ourselves, too. And there’s the sin. Because when we unreasonably fault ourselves, we deny that we are loveable, and loved.

I’d go so far as to suggest that the opposite of hate is not love, but hope. Hope in our innate potential for goodness. Hope that the image and likeness of the Divine dwells within us. And hope in the truth of what we accept and celebrate at Christmas—God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.
